Spider Man Into the Spider Verse Draw It Too
Spider-Man 3 MAY Be Drawing the Wrong Lessons From Into the Spider-Verse
The MCU's Spider-Man 3 is starting to feel more like Sam Raimi's overstuffed Spider-Man 3 than Into the Spider-Verse.
For the currently untitled Spider-Man 3, Marvel Studios seems to be taking inspiration from Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It has been reported that not only will Alfred Molina reprise his role of Doctor Octopus from Sam Raimi'sSpider-Man 2, but Kirsten Dunst will also return as Mary Jane Watson andThe Amazing Spider-Man'sAndrew Garfield will swing through the film. The concern with that, however, is that the Marvel Cinematic Universe's third Spider-Man film willfollow in the footsteps of Raimi's overcrowdedSpider-Man 3.
Spider-Man 3 has some undeniable problems, particularly with its oversaturation of villains. This led to a meandering plot with pacing issues and an ultimately unsatisfying finish to the series. Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy helped to launch the modern superhero craze and its impact on the current MCU can not be overstated, but much likeThe Amazing Spider-Man series, it bit off more than it could chew.
Marvel Studio's Spider-Man 3 could also inherit the aforementioned problems ofThe Amazing Spider-Man films if it isn't careful. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 featured too much ambition and not enough meaningful plot. That film attempted to introduce the Sinister Six for a potential spinoff, including Jaime Foxx as Electro -- who will also return inSpider-Man 3 -- Dean DeHaan as Green Goblin and Paul Giamatti as Rhino. The film spent so much time attempting to introduce iconic characters and set up future films, that it ended up killing the entire series instead of launching it.
Years later cameSpider-Man:Into the Spider-Verse,featuring the big screen introduction of Miles Morales. Miles is trained by an alternate version of Peter Parker to be a hero after the Spider-Man on his Earth was murdered. Also appearing in the film are several other alternate reality Spider-People, including Spider-Woman, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham and Peni Parker. However, this film made up for the mistakes of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 by balancing its heroes and a large array of villains properly.
The way Into the Spider-Verse pulled this off was by not making the villain the focal point that they were in the live-action films. In that sense, the major takeaway from the animated film should not be that more villains equal a better film. Instead, Marvel Studios should realize that a good story fueled by characters with heart will lead to a successful Spider-Man story.
Similar to Spider-Verse,Marvel's Spider-Man video game was, and continues to be, a huge hit. The game features a whole slew of villains and adversaries but balances them successfully. However, the risk in comparing video games to films is that games have the advantage of an elongated run time that creates room the story for more villains and more opportunities to explore the stories they bring with them. The concern that arises from the success ofSpider-Verse andMarvel's Spider-Man is that the wrong lessons will be taken from those properties when translating their ideas to live-action.
That being said, the characterization of Holland's Peter Parker has made him a fan-favorite already, and his first two films were hits both critically and commercially. So, it's fair to say that director Jon Watts and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal have earned some trust moving forward. They were able to launch the Spider-Man character for the third time in a short span in a way that was surprisingly fresh and unique, meaning there is also a good chance that they have found a way to balance all these returning characters.
Many of Holland's Spider-Man's best Spider-Man moments are ones that feature vulnerability and growth, such as when he confronts the loss of his mentor Tony Stark and when he tries to ask out his crush, MJ. Those moments share an emotional component that is similar to the types of things that endeared audiences to Miles Morales on his own superhero journey. Miles' character and the film's specific characterization and execution of him are some of the biggest highlights of the Oscar-winning film. Hopefully, Spider-Man 3 maintains that similarity in its story structure since it's clearly emulating the 2018 hit in other ways.
Directed by Jon Watts, the currently untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina and Benedict Cumberbatch. The film arrives in theaters Dec. 17, 2021.
